People\nwho are overweight tend to have more fat deposits in their necks; said deposits\ncan easily end up blocking the airway, thus resulting in the breathing pauses\nassociated with sleep apnea. In many cases, losing weight can go a long way toward\nmaking your sleep apnea less severe. It\u2019s therefore worth making the extra\neffort to shed a few pounds by exercising more often and eating a balanced\ndiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Sleeping On Your Back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have sleep apnea, you need to be mindful of your\nregular sleeping position and how it could affect the quality of your slumber.\nSleeping on your back could make your sleep apnea worse due to the tongue\nfalling back and obstructing the airway. It\u2019s generally better to sleep on your\nside to reduce the chances of your breathing being disrupted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Alcohol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sleep apnea is often the result of muscles in the throat\nbecoming too relaxed and blocking the airway. Alcohol can potentially make this\nproblem worse, as it can cause the muscles to relax even further. It\u2019s highly\nrecommended that you stay away from any sort of alcoholic beverage for at least\na few hours before you go to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Certain Types of Medications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several types of medications that are known to\nrelax the muscles, and as such they can end up inadvertently making your sleep\napnea worse. Are you taking muscle relaxants, opioids, benzodiazepines, or\nsleep aids? If so, they could be having an adverse effect on the quality of\nyour slumber; talk to your doctor to see what they recommend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Age<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all of the factors that contribute to sleep apnea are\nwithin your control. In many cases, the simple process of getting older can make\nyour sleep-disordered breathing worse. As you age, the muscles in your throat\nbecome weaker, thus increasing the chances of an airway collapse.
